This is a quicker painting tutorial that covers my newest painting and how I painted it. It's fairly simple and straight forward to paint. Starting with blocks of color, I paint light to dark, background to foreground, and show you how layering dark to light can create a pretty cool perspective.
The first thing to remember is that the precise colors are not what matters most. I would focus on making sure that each ridge gets lighter as you move back towards the sky. If you get that correct, the color almost doesn't really matter.
Let's begin..
The orange color for the sky was about 80% titanium white and 20% cad orange.
The clouds were about 95% light gray and 5% red.. Some were darker gray and a touch more red added.
The far mountain horizon was a mix of about 90% gray and 10% cadmium red.
I then mixed a bit of that into the sky color to get the orange tones between the ridges.
The next ridge closer was a darker gray mixed with some red and a touch of magenta. So 85% gray, 10% red, 5% magenta
As these ridges moved closer to the right, under the sun, I simply added more red to them and perhaps some white.
Down lower in this area I began to add some ultramarine blue to the mix. Changing the mixture to 80% gray, 9% magenta, 1% red, and 10% blue.
The darker and much closer ridge was ultramarine blue and black. Or another way is by mixing any blue with a complementary color.
