My newest oil painting, “Heavenly,” features a Glacier National Park inspired landscape at dawn. The small path winds up into the forest beneath a dramatic mountain backdrop. The early sunlight brightly illuminates the clouds pink as they stream off the peaks before the dark storm clouds engulf it.

I painted this on a homemade panel using this rolled canvas: http://shrsl.com/1qg3d
Color Mixtures:
For the sky – I used cobalt blue, manganese blue hue, magenta, tit white, and black. With a good amount of cobalt blue, I added a bit of manganese blue and magenta to it. I used white and black to mix different scales of gray to lighten or darken the mixture. The brighter part of the sky near the center was manganese blue and white only. The right portion of the sky I added more magenta to so that it appeared more red or violet looking. For the pink glow, I used magenta, a tough of cad orange, and white.
For the mountain – In the more reddish portion I used magenta, a touch of manganese blue, and different scales of gray to lighten or darken the mix. For the brighter red/orange highlights to the right, I added orange and white to the same mixture, perhaps a touch of cad red. For the rest of the mountain I used cobalt blue, manganese blue, and different scales of gray to lighten or darken it as well.
For the Trees – I used primarily black and cad yellow light along with a touch of white and red for all areas of the trees. More white and yellow for the highlights.
For the foreground – I used cad yellow light, and scales of gray for most of the green foliage. I used scales of gray and a touch of red and magenta for the path and smaller rocks. I added more cad red and orange to the mix for the reddish areas of the boulders. The flowers were either yellow and white or manganese/cobalt blue and white. Magenta was used for some of the purple areas.
